Customizable shapes?

I need to draw shapes onto a map for a project, and just wondering what is the correct/best way to do this?

I did it quickly with the pen tool then turned them into shapes, but when I select it and activate the pen tool I no longer have any option to adjust the points/path/edges.

I'm guessing I didn't do it in the correct non-destructive way and it is probably too late to change these now, but even if so I would like to know how to do it correctly next time.

Select your Pen Tool.
Select/Highlight the shape layer you wish to change.
Activate the path of the shape by holding Cmd/Cntrl key and click on the shape in your work area/canvas.

This should activate the path so you can adjust it.

Ahhh, I was clicking paths in the right hand window, I guess that's why it wasn't working. thanks!
