CS5 Quick Mask has stopped working

Hi. I'm brand new to this site but I've browsed many of the posts and this seems like a good place to ask for help.

I have successfully used Quick Mask hundreds of times and I know exactly how it's supposed to work, but it mysteriously stopped functioning a few days ago. I click the rectangular Quick Mask icon and start painting my selection with a black brush at 100% opacity. The ruby-red mask color appears as normal, but when I'm done painting and hit the Quick Mask icon again... nothing happens. The ruby-red disappears, there are no marching ants and there is nothing selected. And worse, from this point CS5 somehow gets stuck in Quick Mask mode and none of the normal tools will function properly. If I click the Quick mask icon again my original ruby-red selection re-appears, but all I can do from this point is toggle back and forth on the Quick Mask icon. I never get anything selected and I cannot disengage from being stuck in QM mode unless I exit Photoshop and re-launch it.

I tried resetting all preferences, and then I re-installed the entire CS5 software, but nothing works. Everything else in Photoshop seems to work just fine including all the other selection tools. It's only Quick Mask.

Any ideas?

I fixed it !! I thought I had already deleted my preferences file, but apparently not. After starting CS5 while holding down Ctrl+Alt+Shift I deleted the preferences and everything started working again. (I would have thought that uninstalling and re-installing CS5 would have overwritten the preferences file, but I guess not.)
