I had a system crash and rebuild with new MB and more RAM and 64-bit Win 7 OS.

Photoshop CS4 reload went fine, but my NIK Color Efex Pro programs installed but CS4 does not find them. NIK Tech support closed for holidays so I'm wondering how can I tell CS4 to find the NIK plug-ins. Apparently under Win 7 64-bit, there are two Program folders, Programs and Programs (x86). Nik installed the plug-ins in trhe latter. I have tried installing them under Programs but CS4 still does not find the plug-ins. I also went to Edit > Preferences > Plug-ins and told CS4 to look where the NIK installer put the programs but still no luck.

Thanks

On a 64 bit system, the Programs folder is where 64 bit applications are installed and Programs (x86) is where the 32 bit applications are installed.
If you run the Photoshop version that is installed in the Programs folder, then you're running the 64 bit version of Photoshop. 64 bit programs can only run 64 bit applications and that includes plug-ins. Since most plug-ins for Photoshop are 32 bit, you won't be able to use them in the 64 bit version of Photoshop, heck.. .they won't even show up in the menu as you have noticed. Photoshop DOES find them, but they will be ignored since they're 32 bit.

You need to install your 32 bit plug-ins in \Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS4\Plug-ins and even then you will only be able to use them with the 32 bit version of Photoshop. If you want to use third party plug-ins in the 64 bit version of Photoshop, then you need 64 bit plug-ins, there is no other way around it. It's the same with the 64 bit version of Internet Explorer and Firefox; none will support Flash, since Flash is only available in 32 bit.

As for Nik Color Efex Pro, this is what their web site says:

At this time, Nik Software products are not compatible with the 64-bit version of Photoshop CS4 on a Windows 64-bit operating system.

I also use Windows 64 bit and Photoshop 64 bit and in all fairness, CS4 is so advanced, I can only think of one third party plug-in I wouldn't be able to be without. :D
