CS3 - layers

I am VERY new to Photoshop - whilst I understand the concept of layers I cannot seem to get two images onto my working space. As soon as I put the second one up, the first disappears. Hopefully someone can give me a little guidance. I am reading two Adobe books but cannot get my head around it.

I do have a problem - the books say I should have the "Bridge" icon in my ribbon but it isn't there although the program is loaded on the PC - I can transfer images to CS3 but as I mention above it deletes the previous image that I also want to work with.

Sorry I may sound totally stupid but I am new to this and to computers despite my 60+ years
Many thanks

Well, Are u viewing in full screen(Press F a few times )? or do u have the document window maximized?
or Are u sure its CS3? because CS4 automatically covers the working area unless u change it

CS3 layers

Hi - thanks for replying - definitely CS3 Extended - and I am working in full screen, in fact I have a 22" screen so things are a little wider than taller!
The book tells me to press Ctrl+Alt+Shift when operning CS3 to clear previous settings.

I think the problem you’re having is that you are opening images instead of placing images. To add each new image to its own layer, try this:

First, open the first image (File > Open). Then, choose File > Place to add each new image to its own layer.

As far as why the Bridge icon is not appearing on the ribbon, I believe the book you are reading is probably aimed at Mac users so you shouldn’t see a ribbon at all.
