Hey guys, I work in CRM, Communications and Social Media for one of the UK's largest leisure/entertainment brands. I've decided I want to produce my own graphics for a couple of reasons:

1. I'm not a fan of the design agencies we use; I'd much rather use my own creativity.
2. To progress my career, this will be a huge addition to my arsenal.

So first, the big, major, huge question. I will be creating/editing graphics mainly for web use, and currently have no desire or need to work with photos (perhaps this could change in time, but i doubt it).

Should I learn Photoshop or Fireworks?

I thought Fireworks was a thing of the past. My thought is that if your a real pro you will know Photoshop inside out and upside down. You know Adobe is going to all cloud based very shortly. Join that and pay a monthly fee and you'll have access to all the Adobe products.

Oh, and Photoshop is far from just being a photo editor

well I would say photoshop over fireworks 2 years ago I used Fireworks a lot for more of web development stuff and even now if you are looking at images for web development then fireworks is still usefull as they give you a lot more options and for example image roll over effects. But like ALB says fireworks seems to be fading out as with the new creative cloud they have the edge suite or Muse cant remember of hand what they call it but it is like creative suite but more for web development, It is very good for making dynamic websites but if your just looking at making images then photoshop is the daddy along with illustrator.

If you are buying creative cloud then for the price of 2 applications you get the whole suite and more but if you are just going to use creative cloud for 1 application the $20 a month you will be paying will leave you wanting more.

If your buying software and your new to all of it then i would suggest Photoshop but depending on the level of images your making and complexity you may get away with photoshop elements.

So what is best for you is hard to say without knowing exactly what your doing But photoshop will be a good start as it covers everything where as individual other apps spe******e more in certain areas.

Ok cheers guys, will definitely start with Photoshop.

Is there a free online course, or database of articles, for learning PS, that you would recommend?

There are plenty of free articles and "courses"! Start doing tutorials, even if you dont like what the final result is. It's all about navigating and finding the tools in the begining. I would highly recommend visiting Lynda.com for some of their tutorials. They were a big help then I started out.

And also, hi! :)

Also I forgot to add creative live they stream live workshops for photography and ps mainly there is 1 now They are free (whilst they are recording live) but very indepth. I would make a note of scheduled events. And they are interactive baring in mind thousands of people are watching but you can ask questions
