Basically I want to create a long rectangular shape and only have solid color in the middle and fades into transparency on both ends.

How do I achieve this?

use rectangular marquee tool to create a rectangle the size you would like it and then use the gradient fill tool and select reflective gradient and click and drag however big you want it!

or you could create a rectangle and set fill to 0% and go on blending options gradient overlay double click the gradient to create your own, click the top rectangle arrow things and set opacity to 0% apart from in the middle keep that one 100%.
it should look like this
