Creating faded colors on paper (see pic)

Hi,
I am new to the forum but have done a bit of amateur photoshop work.

I saw this picture (below) and am trying to figure out how to create the blue/green faded color effect that is bascially the background of the image. Even a couple guess would be appreciated. Thanks, Carla

Create New Layer, Apply a Gradient to it( WHITE AND BLACK); Then change the Layer Blend Mode to OVERLAY

I must have done something wrong as this gave me what looks like a gradient in a blue instead of a worn or faded look.
