Creating beat up/bruise effects on independent layer

Hi there Everyone!

I am trying to make a beat up game where anyone could upload a photo and then after the beat up have some bruises. Therefore the old bruise or beat up tutorials won't work, as they are made specifically for a given photo and most of them use the burn tool on the photo itself.

Could you give me some ideas how could I make bruises without using the photo or adjustment mask.

What I would like to do is to make the bruise on a layer then save it as transparent png and then in the game I set the transparency around 80% so the bruise looks real.

Please give me some ideas if you can, how would you do it...
Thank you in advance!

:bustagut:This is one of the funnier requests I've seen! Nevertheless . . . I would create the person I wanted to put the bruises on. I would design them directly from the image but with feathered edges so they could melt in to any figure. You may want to have enough so that they fit different areas and body types if you have that control.
  • My idea would be to lasso an area of the skin and copy to a new layer.
  • Then apply a gradient to that selection on a layer above. Create the gradient so that you have the range of discoloration that you want from edges to middle to edges.
  • Apply that to the selection, then clip the selection to the layer below and warp the selection to get it within the bruise area properly.
  • Try a few opacity changes or blend modes so that the bruise integrates a bit with the skin color.
  • If you don't want the skin at all, then delete those steps and just make the shape.
  • Use guassian blur on the color layer.
  • It may help to use a displacement map to get the bruise to follow the contours of the body area.
  • There are bruise shape brushes available. You might want to download them and see if they help your project.
I hope this helps. I'm sure others will be along with alternate methods. Especially since mine is untried!

Be interesting to know if it works. Come back and critique the method or share what you have explored. That's what it is mostly, figuring out ideas. But, it's quite true that if you have an understanding of PS and how it might be applied, it helps the exploration. Don't give up.
