Creating a grungy / dirty background effect

Hi,

I'm designing my own posters in Photoshop so I can print them out later. I'm having some trouble with the background, though: it's kinda boring... I applied a slight gradient, but I'm still looking for something a bit more interesting.

I have found some posters which have this effect, but I am having trouble recreating it on my own. I am talking about these posters:

(I can't seem to post links unless I have 8 messages)

I would like to recreate the dirty background effect, but I'm failing miserably. Any ideas, pointers or tutorials that I might find useful?

Thanks in advance :)

Hi,
I'm fairly new to PS, been playing around with it for about 18 months now and feel ready to have a go on live projects. Just wanted to mention that I really like the method mentioned above for the grunge effect at 'wonder how to'. I'm sure I'll be using that technique a lot. Great suggestion!
