Hi all

I am trying to create something similar to the buttons attached to this post (1 button in a single picture). I will be using them to numerate items in a document. After creating the circle, what tool can I use to get the nice edge? I you have other suggestions (like making it shiny etc.), you are welcome to chime in.

Thanks in advance.

Best,

Hi,

Here's what you need to do.

1. Select the eliptical marquee tool and make a circular selection - fill this with the desired color. (Base layer).
2. Add a drop shadow to your requirements.
3. Duplicate this layer (this is your highlight layer).
4. Turn-off the drop shadow and add a 'inner glow' to this layer. Set opacity/spread to your desire.
5. Transform this layer and make it slightly smaller than the base layer.
6. Add the text layer with desired text. Add a slight drop shadow to the this layer.
DONE..

Here's how it should look button_example.png

If you create a circle with a flat color of your choice, then on a layer above create another circle slightly smaller than the 1st.

On the 2nd layer add a gradient overlay, with the original color on one side & white on the other, then blend as required. Then add a white stroke to that circle.

The number can be added on a 3rd layer, & given a slight drop shadow.

All the fx settings will be editable & set to your liking depending on your desired appearance, and the size of the finished button. Playing around with them is advised, as you will learn what they do in the process.

This is the outcome. Hope that helps. Any questions please ask.

EDIT: I see Chitkaran posted while I was writing, that is a more indepth guide than what I wrote so you may find that easier to follow :)

Thanks for the quick reply. I will test it out. Can I ask, what should I do it I want to add a "shiny" effect, such as in the following picture?

Sure.

1. Use the Pen tool to create the path you want to shine. Incase not familiar with the pen tool, just use the brush to make highlights.
2. Add a layer mask 1.PNG and fill it with gradient black-white. This will create the shining illusion on the button.
3. Play with the opacity of this layer until eyes say 'this looks nice'

here's the result. button_example_new.png

Thanks, very helpful. I tried experimenting with your PSD, but I couldn't really figure out how to change the blue color to something else. How do I change the color of Layer 1?

Another thing: I tried to decrease the image size from 3.53cm to 0.6cm -- but it becomes very grainy. Why is that? When it is vectorized, the size shouldn't matter?

Thanks for all your help so far.

Add a 'Color Overlay' to the layer 1 to change the color of the button.

I posted the PSD for reference... learn... practice.... create your own set of web-button.. have fun...

do post results here to see what you came up with.

-- And if you decrease the size to 0.6cm, increase the pixel/inch and the grains won't appear.. 150 or maybe 200 .. hit/trial method
