copy/paste shape into SAME LAYER

I'm trying to make a compound shape by copy/pasting a shape into the same layer and using Add to Shape area...

the regular copy/paste commands aren't working and it needs to be in the same layer so Duplicate Layer won't do it...

You need to select the shape with the direct selection tools used for vector rather than just copy/paste the layer. Then you can grab the vector shape itself and put it into the shape layer for another shape and it should work.
