Hi,

I have a couple of lines of text I want to be able to grab as a source and drop on to a series of existing images,
then be able to edit those lines of text to fit.

Is there a way to do this?

Thank you

Notepad the text.
Save the notepad with the .psd.
Then Copy and paste from the notepad when you want.
Then add the text to the .psd with the text tool.
Then edit the text as you please in photoshop.
Change font and size as you please...
Note to add some effects to this text you will have to rasterize it.
also, same proceeds in gimp.

Hello Matt,

Thank you for your detailed reply and solution.

I'm not so sure this is going to work as an action for me - beginning with how to save a .txt file with(in) a .psd.
I'm using CS4 on a mac.

Maybe i made my explanation worse than it is? ... I have two lines of text (with font and effects ascribed) in one psd file.
I want to make an action so that I can grab those two lines and drop them on top of an opened .psd file.

Then I can edit text to fit the file width (by hand, unless there is some kind of auto-scale?) before selecting my existing action which reads: align one layer to center, align to top, then align other layer to center, align to bottom, save psd, flatten, save as jpg, close.

Is the solution still as complex as you describe?

Many thanks -

I am afraid this only covers saving the text without any of its properties ( font, size, colour etc. ) and does not solve grabbing existing text from a picture. I tried to grab, but I can get it only as an image, I cannot find a way to select text. I do not say it is impossible, I just cannot find it.

Hi Peta,

Thank you for your reply! I had about the same amount of success as you. Interesting that this is an issue. I am now wondering
if I should create and save both layers as two separate vector (.ai) files and try to drop them in place. If that works, I can rescale to fit without degradation/artifacts.

Will give this a try and get back to this thread with my results.

Many thanks!

Never done this before coz I take the lazy route... click and drag to new document , then apply action... lol...

But here's a thought....

The other way to transfer layers between open documents is using the Duplicate function. When you right-click on a Layer you can choose Duplicate from the menu. The Duplicate dialog box then asks you which document to use as the destination.

Hope this works....

Select Layer.

Either ... Layer>Duplicate Layer OR Layer via Duplicate in the options button of the layer palette.

In the dialog box, choose the destination file you would like to copy them to.

And continue with your saved action.

Editt your action to include the steps outlined above.

Works perfectly, thank you very much. I tried several times, I knew it has to be in layer, but gave up. Thank shadowcatcher for asking and dv8_fx for nice and simple solution.

Hi Everyone!,

Thanks DV8 - that's what I have been doing for a few months.
Problem is the novelty has worn off.

What I am doing is watermarking/branding my images after they have been cropped and opened from within the RAW dialog box.

Doing things the way which I have been has caused me a lot of repetitive hand work (yes, I am lazy!) as no two images are exactly the same size.

In my mind I can visualize an action where there is an open file on the desktop (or a bunch), and an action invoked where two layers of editable text (font, size, color, effects already ascribed) are brought in from another file and dropped on top for adjustment.

The duplicate layer strategy works if you have both source (with logo layers) and the destination file open at the same time. But then you still have to name where the duplicated layers are heading. Going this route, it is less keystrokes to select the file with the logos and drag them to the destination file.

Hope this is making sense?
