Copy-Merged is Snapping Incorrectly

Hopefully there is a simple setting to fix this, but I can’t find it. (I'm using CS5.)
  1. I start with a base image. Then I add several new layers above it and do work in each.
  2. I now want to combine all of these new layers—but only the new layers—into one merged layer. (And I want to keep all the individual new layers in case I need them later.)
  3. To do this, I turn-off the visibility of the base layer, so that only my new layers are visible. Then, with the top layer active, I enter Select All > Copy Merged > Paste.
  4. This gives me the desired merged image on a new layer, but now it's no longer superimposed directly over the underlying image. Instead, the new merged image is pasted a few inches away from where it “belongs”. It’s as if the new merged image is snapping to some unknown, invisible spot rather than staying put over the underlying image.
  5. This problem only happens when the base layer visibility is turned off. Somehow, having all the empty pixels exposed causes the new merged layer to lose its moorings and wander off.
Is there a setting to correct this?

Thanks
Rich

Hi Rich54,

Whats happening is that the merged layers become a selection, the center of this selection is then pasted aligned with the center of the document....which is why when you copy and merge the base layer as well it appears not to move, it's already in the center.

Rather than use 'copy merged' use 'Stamp Visible' instead. The shortcut is Ctrl + Alt + Shift + E (CAS+E)....gives your fingers a good workout that one!

One caveat....you cannot do this if the selected layer is empty or off, you MUST select the FIRST VISIBLE NON-EMPTY layer, it just won't work otherwise.

Regards.
MrTom.

PS. There is no need to select anything with this method either.....just turn off the base layer, selected the first non-empty visible layer and hit the shortcut. :)

PPS. The new merged layer is placed above the selected, this means you can select any visible non-empty layer in the stack and the shortcut will merge everything visible below it into a new layer.....it doesn't have to be the first from the top.
