Copy and pasting across layers in CS2

I hope one of you experts can help me, I am pulling my hair out here!!

I have created a layered image made up of a background, text box and 2 images all in different layers. I need to reduce the size of one image, so I selected the layer, selected the image, copied and pasted to a new clipboard image. The idea was to re-size and then copy back.

The problem is, when I paste onto the transparent area, it just goes white.

If I paste as a new layer onto my original image, it only pastes a "ghost" version in red. I have tried re-booting but pasting has just stopped working.

The other thing I have notice, which I am sure is connected, when I paste to a new image, the colour version is "greyscale." I have tried changing it to rgb, but that doesn't fix it either and anyway reverts back to greyscale with the next new one.

So

1. Why are my new images set to greyscale and how do I make rgb default again.
2. Why when I copy and paste, does it paste either in white or a red ghost?

I don't really have answers for all your questions, mostly just more questions. But be patient; members come and go and in part of the world it's still Sunday and fewer folks are around during the day.

As to making rgb your default for new documents, be sure when you make the new that it is set to rgb and I suggest transparent background. Once you make a new doc, your next ones should follow the last setting. Often if you copy and paste an image into a new file, if it is b&w to begin with PS will make you a greyscale document, because it reads the clipboard. Change it in the new window.

As for your copy and paste being white, I don't understand what you're describing. When you have the red, is your quick mask on?

Why are are you resizing an image in a separate document when you can do that with transform tools within the same document?

I think this copy/paste issue came up awhile ago, but I can't find the right search terms, presuming I'm remembering right anyway. One thing you could try while waiting for a decent answer, is to reset your preferences. It's worth a try.

I'm not on the computer at the moment but it sounds like you have new documents set to open in grayscale instead of RGB. So whenever you open a new document you're bringing over or pasting into a grayscale file which will change it over From RGB or whatever

My question for you would be, why are doing any of that to simply re-size an image on a an individual layer? Just hit cntrl t and re-size it that way. If you hold the shift key while re-sizing your transformation will stay uniform. If you need precise dimensions you can plug those in up top. Maybe I misunderstood what you wanted to do, but this way is definitely easier than what you're going through. :)
