I'm coming back to photoshop after a long absence. Not that I'm all that experienced with it in the first place though, but I do have something.
I'm coming at it with a bit of an attitude change. I've decided to pursue a career as a game programmer, and I've decided to make my interests in photoshop relate to that. I'm only going to be focusing on photoshop in the meantime, but once I feel satisfied with my skill in photoshop (able to do anything with at least a small shred of professionalism) I'm wanting to expand the skill into other areas such as 3D editing, and most fields of graphic design in general.

I'm going back to college to study this as a minor hopefully this coming summer semester, and if not the fall, but in the meantime I am trying to self educate myself as much as possible (the same with programming). So, I hope to get along with everyone here to the fullest extent possible :wink:. Currently I am most interested in learning how to use lighting in an image. (adv. effects such as source light, and how light interacts with an environment)

Here are some of the few works I did from years back. I believe I could do much better now, since I was just messing around non-seriously, but I have yet to test myself. I'm just trying to learn.

Welcome to the forum CupOhCoffee I can agree photoshop is a good place to start but if you want to get into character moddelling etc then a more specific program such as Maya or studio max will be your best bet especially for lighting, and then using photoshop to finish it off.

Rotobrush also seems to be vey popular in the gaming moddelling world as well.

I love photoshop but I am the first to admit for 3d moddelling you are better of using a more advanced program.

Well, I know this isn't best for 3d modeling. I'm not thinking to use photoshop for that. I'm just using photoshop which is something I'm familiar with to introduce me into digital medium, and what I'm mainly trying to learn, artistic concepts.
I'm still not sure if that's the best way to do it, since I'm not familiar with 3d modeling or anything of that sort. What is your opinion?

And I'll most likely start learning 3d modeling officially: when I go back to college. And unofficially in my free time: when I'm satisfied with artistic concepts/photoshop ability.

My son is a programmer for EA and has been in the business for nearly a decade. It's a tough business to be in, but if you're good you can make a good living and have some fun. Good luck to you.

Thanks : ) It is definitely a hard field and I'm not expecting it to be easy at all. I came to the conclusion after a great deal of soul searching, and realized that its what I should be doing, because its something that I honestly enjoy doing and have a passion for. I am still logical though, so I wouldn't do it if it wasn't viable.

Welcome CupOhCoffee or welcome back :mrgreen:

Difficult or not, if it is what draws you, pursue it, and you'll never have to struggle with "I wish I had." It'll be fun to see your work as you develop.

When you say artistic concepts, I am not sure what all you mean, but if this includes learning about the aesthetics of art -- design, drawing, sculpture, film, photography, architecture, etc. -- study art history. That is my two cents :}
