Combining two layer masks

Hey all,

Ok, I watched a tutorial on how to combine layer masks.

It's simple; select the mask in the Layer panel and reveal selection (cmd + click). Then do shift+cmd+click on the second mask.
Then create a new mask with those active selections.

My issue is that I'm able to select the first mask but not add the second one. I do see the hand cursor with the + sign but nothing happens when I click.

Any idea what is going on ?

maybe selection of mask 1 is bigger then selection of mask2
maybe selection of mask 2 is half transparent , if opacity < 50% you will not see the selection-ants

you can also do
1) select the mask in the Layer panel and reveal selection (cmd + click)
2) click on mask 2 and fill this selection with white

this way , you change mask 2 in the combined mask

Hey there,

Thanks for the tips.

I think the mask sizes may be a problem.
Here are my two masks. Essentially the small mask of the top is the rear car window.
I'd like to incorporate that into the mask of the car to hide the rear car window.

Because I'm cutting the car out and motion blurring the background.

I tried your technique but I'm still having trouble.
Should I start by selecting the car or the rear back window ?

Thanks

oh wait , you have to invert the selection

so it's
1) select the mask of layer 1 (ctrl + click)
2) invert the selection
3) select the mask of the car and fill with black
