I have an idea to colorize black and white videos in After Effects, and please comment if you have anything to improve it, because I really want to color my old movies.
I plan to open my video
Than make a new null object
Then use Motion Tracking on the null object layer
Then use masking and color correction to add the color
Attach the color layer to the motion tracked null object
Can this work? I am new to AE, so please pardon. Also, I have a part of my black and white film where a man move his head and hands a lot, how can I keep the color layer in sync with the movement of his hands and body, and not have the color overlap into the background?
Thank you for any help you can give.

I have alot of experience with AE, and to colour stills I much prefer to use AE, however with colouring you would have to correct the highlights and shadows, also Im not sure the tracking would be accurate enough masked onto the area you want. you could try it , but I would be very hard/impossible to do I think :)

Yeah I would have to agree it will be almost impossible but could be if you are very patient and are prepared to animate the null object frme by frame. would you be doing this with a null for every colour or just linking them all to the same object it will be very hard to get good results for example if you were to colour the eyes not only do you have to animate the position of your colour layer but also any variations ie if they blink you have to mask the layer of for that period of time if the lips move you have to redo your colour layer etc. maybe just adding a colour tint to the video would be a lot easier.
