Coloring colored line art

How do you color line art that is done in a lighter color without the color darkening the line art? See the example where the orange and brown darkens the line art. Thanks for any help, I'm sure I'll feel like a rocket scientist when the answer is revealed. lol

That was done intentionally of course. I assume you are using layers?

Whether you are or not, the only way to make a color, such as your line art transparent is to lower the opacity or change the blend mode. If you're directly painting (not done on this desgin you show) you cn alter the opacity of the brush or the mode.

But when you lay any color on one layer over another, that color will be opaque. That is the first example. In the second example the layer with the stroke is set to linear burn. Since the BG is white, it makes no difference, but the color below reflects the change in blending mode.
