I am interested in learning how to properly color correct and retouch images using photoshop. I know generally how to do it using some work arounds and shortcuts but I want to be able to do it using the proper tools. Can anyone suggest a current/updated book (preferred) or tutorial resource out there that can help me accomplish this?

THANKS!

The best way is to read the books by Dan Margulis - he is the guru of colour correction. But beware you have to read this books about 3 times to fully understand what can be done. I've tried summarising a few of them on my web site - but colour casts is a difficult one. You could try a demo of CurveMeister and even better take their free course - it taught me one hell of a lot.
Good luck

Google Videos and You Tube are great resources. There are some good books out there - I like the Worth1000.com books myself.

If your photograph has just minor color correction issues the following can help

Levels - go auto levels on a copy of the layer.

If part of the image is too dark but the highlights are okay look at the Shadows/Highlight button this is an amazing color correcting tool.

Finally curves are great for popping out the lights and darks.
