color change trouble

im designing a tshirt for a client and i am drawing something in black using the paintbrush tool. i messed up because i forgot it needs to be dark brown. to use paint bucket makes the images lines distorted and "fat". is there no way to just take the black i drew by itself in its layer and turn it all another color without messing it up?

If all of your drawing is on a seperate layer with a transparent background and has a fairly clean edge, you can use the magic wand on the transparent area and then reverse the selection and use the fill tool.

I'll use the select color range command and work from there, leaving all the other colors (not selected) alone. You can even tweak the range of the selection.
