When I place an image....add an object like a box in front of the image....add gradient to the box...click on both objects....go to objects...clipping mask...make After that, the image still looks the same with no gradient / fade.. Any ideas?

1) Place an image onto an artboard
2) select object (box)
3) Move object over the image
4) Select gradient
5) Select both objects
6) Go to objects from menu
7) Select clipping mask
8) Select “make”
9) They merge but without a gradient in the image

Try the short cut...

Make your gradient map above the "Object" then on the gradient map layer, press.....

Shift+Ctrl+G

See if that works.

Place your image.
Make the shape with the gradient on top.
Select both objects.
Open the transparency panel.
Click Make Mask. Check clip if you want that.

If the method I gave you doesn't work, I don't know what the problem is. But I can tell you that the first method you detailed in your second post will mask the shape, but not with a gradient.

What can I say...you're right. Don't I feel dumb. Thanks so much. Hey side note... how do you toggle off that blue "X" in the middle of your image? Mine is turned on now and cant find where you turn it off. Thanks in advance.
