Clipping a layer onto a layer with styles

Hi guys,

Just registered here, all good so far!

I'm trying to clip a layer onto another layer that contains styles. Whenever I do this though, the layer I'm clipping appears to disappear. My guess is that it's inheriting the styles from the layer it's being clipping onto, and so it's indistinguishable.

So my question is how can I clip onto a layer with styles, but not inherit? I can't seem to find any 'clipping layer properties' kind of thing, or anything that allows me to specify it.

Can anybody help?

Thanks
Adam

Ah, I've found a solution.

If you right click on the layer styles of the base layer and select "Create layers", that will apply the individual styles as clipping mask layers themselves. Then creating a clipping mask on the original layer I wanted to clip, that will now clip correctly without inheriting the base layer's styles.

Cheers anyway :)

Hmm.. Not quite perfect actually. Once you convert the styles to clip masks you can't change the original styles, so it's not really any better than flattening the layer each time you make changes and clipping the layer to that. :(

Go to Blending options of the base layer and check "Blend Interior Effects as Group" and uncheck "Blend Clipped Layers as Group"

technical remark. In some cases itd be better to convert a base layer to smart object due to the fact that a clipping layer doesnt affect outer effects such as outer glow, dropshadow and stroke.
