Chrome wheel in Illustrator

This was a wheel I did completely in Illustrator. Using nothing but pen tool & gradients. except for the gaps & the tiny highlight by the bolts, which where just color fills. There is not one stroke in the image at all.

My aim was to replicate the moulded look of the wheel, & hopefully achieve a chrome type feel to it. The image was used as the head on model of mine called "Wheelman"

This is an excellent design indeed. The one thing I noticed is that the inside portions of the spoke "sets" have a dark inside shading while the outer portions have a brighter lighting/shading. It looks unbelievable and throws off the lighting accuracy. But hey, it does looks awesome either way.

Thx for the comment. I do see what you mean, but the darker sections are the thicker edge & lead into the back of the wheel, so not getting the same light as the front section. That was the plan anyway.

I thought that might be the point but was not sure. Are you going to use this in a larger, more complicated image?

Like it, though I think the tyre ruins it. After putting the effort in the get the chrome effect done, the tyre just looks like a torus with a gradient.

Completely agree. The tyre wasn't the focus, more of a border around the wheel for the purpose of the model. I did try to improve it, by adding some brand text around it, & even tried to add tread (which failed miserably), so I will probably remove it & attempt to make a pattern using just the chrome. I will see how it goes.
