I am TOTALLY new to photoshop and cannot understand the manuel. I am thick skulled.

How do I change the background of a picture.

I have a picture of my child and the background is almost all grass, I would like it somewhere else/

THANKS!!!!

select your eraser tool, and erase whatever you don't want (ie: the grass/bkgnd).
now select your Wand Tool, click in the white area (where u just erased), it should now be selected. If there are white areas you don't want that are NOT selected... hold down the Shift key and click those areas too.
Now that you have all the areas you don't want, selected... goto Select > Inverse to inverse your selection.
Now the part you DO want (your child) is selected.
Copy and Paste it into a new layer.
Now you can do whatever you want! Example: place a new layer underneath the image of your child... then add a bkgnd picture or whatever... it will now be behind your foreground picture (ie: your child).
