changing a picture into black and white??

Hello,

This is probably really basic.
I am a glass artist and I have some projects that revolve around being able to turn a photo into black and white. I notice that when it is in black and white it is actually in about 10 shades of gray as well. I need it to be only in black and white. It would also be nice to know how to turn a colored photo into maybe four or five different colors and still have it look somewhat normal.

Any help with this would be greatly appreciated. I am working on a project that has 10,000 glass pieces in it, but it revolves around knowing how to do these things.

Thanks.

Black and white

You can find on codervods.com/Default.aspx?mode=default&&category=Adobe%20Photoshop&&days=7&&currentIndex=0
some tutorials about black and white effects. Maybe you can find something usefull for you there.

you might also want to look into Image->Adjustments->Posterize. That adjustment lets you define how many colors are in a photo. so if you want only stark white and perfect black, just use the standard "black and white" effect in photoshop (image->adjustment->black & white) and then posterize it down to 2 colors. Posterize will also work on simplifying the color scheme on a full color picture.

posterize

you can probably use the posterize method for the strictly black & white look.

for the different colors, i usually make layered copies of the photos, use color balancing and selective coloring techniques and then lower the opacities of each.
