Canvas disappears when using area selection tools.

When trying to create an ellipsis, lasso an area or other similar action the canvas disappears:

When I release the tool the canvas reappears again:

Does anyone know how to correct this?

never had it, can't think of something that might cause this
seems like your photoshop is bugged a bit
