Hello everyone. A friend had an image created, of a star, and cannot get hold of the person who created it. She's asked me but i have a problem, how to remove the background so you just have the star so that you can layer it on another background? I tried this a few weeks ago, changed it onto a transparent layer. Wierd thing is when you put it onto another background, the transparent layer suddenly changes to a white background! Anyone got any ideas?

If you save it as jpg, then it will be white because jpg don't support transparencie. That could be one possibility. There could be few more.

P.S. easiest way to cut this one out is use path.

As i understand making transparent isn't your real problem, so forget it.
Image you gave don't have transparencie. Is that original?
My advice is make fullscreen screenshot of that transparent layer turning white and post it.

Thats right, all i actually want to be able to do is rid the star image of its background so i can place the star image on any background i want to. How do i do this? Apologies if i'm confusing anyone.

Happens.
Here is psd with 3 layer. View attachment audiocatstar.psd
One is cutted by using path (without shadows and borders)
One is without shadows. And one is with little shadows.
Select the one you liked most and copy. Or just put background under it. That's up yo you.

If you intrested in how it done. Then last two was just erased background using eraser tool. This particular image is simple so no need to use selecting, magicwand or else.
I just pick eraser tool (E), choose in option Mode:Brush and set size to 20px and Hardness to 25%.

Copy Background layer to new layer (switch off Background layer). And "painted" emptyness (transparencie) with eraser tool.
Tip1: you can "paint" straight line by clicing first at imaginery line start then click at that imaginery line's end holding SHIFT. Undo (2last steps) if line not good. And try again. And work with eraser in corners a litle.
Tip2: to better understanding is erasing going well make layer filled with some plain color under layer with star.
Something like that.

P.S. If you want to cut star without shadow use eraser with about 50+% hardness.
