Cannot use filter>distort>lens correction

Hi, this is my first visit to this forum, and I would welcome some help :-) My problem is the following...

I opened an existing psd file in Photoshop CS2. It just consisted of a bottom layer and another layer with a fill. I flattened the layers. I then went to filter>distort>lens correction, because I wanted to introduce some lens distortion to the image - but the "lens correction" option was greyed out.

I tried doing this with another image and it was fine. I have no idea why it wouldn't work with the first image. Does anyone have any ideas about what may be the problem?

There are two reasons, that I am aware of, why you can't select a certain filter:

1 - Some filters are designed to only work with an image that has certain number of bits/channel (BPS).

To correct this, select the image from the layers palette then select Image> Mode > 8 Bits/Channel.

Note: Reducing the BPC may or may not have a discernable impact on your image. You'll need to research this if you are concerned about this.

2 - Some filters can only be applied to certain types of layers (e.g., image layers vs. adjustment layers).

To correct this, make sure you have the correct layer selected from the layers palette.

Note: In CS4, and earlier versions, you can't apply the following filters to an adjustment layer: Lens Correction, Lens Flare, Lighting Effects and NTSC Colors.

Photopportunist - thank you very much for your helpful response, and my apologies for taking so long to get back to the forum (I checked a lot at first for replies then sort of gave up....)

Yup, I must have been using an adjustment layer with CS2. It was helpful to find out those restrictions.

Thanks for this! I was having the same issue and it was because I had converted the color profile to CMYK. Once it was back to RGB, it worked again! The search and solution time was under three minutes too, which is always nice!! : )
