Cannot Save Files

Sometimes I can open a JPG in Photoshop, work on it, and then save it. Other times when I try to save the file I get an "Could not complete your request because of a program error." If I then open another JPG or TIF or PS file and try to save it, I get the same error.

If I close and reopen Photoshop, I still get the same error.
If I restart the computer, then I can save my file, but sooner or later, I get the same error.

Usually, but not always, if I open the file using a different program and save the JPG file as a TIF, and then open Photoshop and try to save the file, I'm okay but after 10-15 minutes I'm back to the same error. This problem has been going on for over a year or so.

I don't believe I have this problem on a different (Windows Vista) computer. What am I doing wrong?

Hi John,
Yes, I gave them a try. Here are the results:

Update Photoshop
I can't afford to update Photoshop because I am retired and living on a rather small, fixed income. I thing that version 7 should work because it worked on my Vista computer for over 10 years without problems.

Grant Photoshop "Full Disk Access"
That's for a MAC computer, I have PC computers.
Hide all layers in the Layers panel then Save again
I hid all layers in the Layers panel but still could not save the file.

Roll back to the previous version of Photoshop
All I have is version 7 and 7.0.1.

Further testing shows that the same problem does occur on my Vista computer, so I'm not sure that the installation is faulty. I think there is something funny going on with the JPG files themselves. It is odd that on both computers, I can save the files a few times. Then the problem pops up and then I can no longer save anything that Photoshop opens, be it JPG, PNG, TIF, or even PSD.

A problem above my pay grade.
It is unclear whether it is a file corruption, Photoshop, or Windows 10 issue.
It is unusual that once you have the problem, it is persistent with other files, not just JPEG. It almost feels like it is beyond just a Photoshop issue.

One standard technique I use to help debug a problem is identifying "what changed" from when you had no problem to now when you have a problem.
Any system update, applications added, changes to your hardware configuration, or application or app settings changes.

If the suggestions on forums do not help, a hands-on IT person may be required to solve the problem.

I hope you'll get this problem resolved soon.

Here are the results of my trying what you suggested:

Full Scratch Disk
My scratch disk is D: with 838 GB free space. It was originally set to C: but I changed it in an effort to fix my problem. I also cleared all temporary files (52 MB) that were in it but that didn't help either.

Outdated Photoshop Version (Compatibility Issues)
All my files are only a few megabytes large.

FILE CORRUPTION
I tried saving in various file formats but the problem still exists.

PERMISSIONS ISSUES
I have permission to save the file to an external USB drive on one system, and to the C: drive on the Vista system.

And I've restarted Photoshop and my computers several times, all to no avail.

There have been several system updates to the Windows 10 computer, but no updates to the Vista computer. And the Vista computer has never been connected to the internet.

Sorry you couldn't help, but I know you tried. In the meantime, I started using Snagit to add my dates to the photos and I've had no problems saving them afterwards!
