Illustrator Cannot open the doc

I sent a file to a my sister's friend and he told me that he cannot open the ai file I gave him (in zip). It says unknown format cannot open the doc. I am suspecting that 1. He used MSWord to open the ai file 2. He has a earlier version go adobe illustrator 3. He open the ZIP directly in adobe illustrator

Is there any possibilities that one of the above are the reason if the error?
Or is there anymore reasons? how can i solve it? Thank you.

He has to extract the AI file from the zip file first.

the only reason would be he is using the wrong program as you suspect

You first need to install "Zip", which is a compression program and it is free. Just have an open folder the zip file can unzip to and click on it and it will go to the open folder unzipped, and you will be golden.
