Can someone help me lighten the gray background?

Hi everyone,

I was hoping that there is someone on this forum who is willing to help me photoshop this photo by [FONT=Helvetica Neue, Arial, sans-serif]Franck Gelabert and make just the grey background lighter (not the model), and hopefully be able to make the grey background 1 tone as much as possible. Doesn't have to be completely 1 toned, but I find that there are too many tones of grey in the photo (i.e. the corners are a lot darker which I am not loving).

I saw a video on YouTube of the same photo printed onto a hotel room wall. It looks as though the photo was photoshopped to have a lighter background as well. I'm looking to achieve results just like this photo! :)

I tried adjusting the brightness and contrast but it didn't turn out that great since I want the model to remain the same. I am looking to get this photo professional printed and enlarged to fit on my wall.

Thank you so much !

I have to run to work, but I tried a simple 50% gray color fill layer set to screen. I used the layer mask to bring back the the models face. The smoke is a little diminished and it's still a little dark in the upper right hand corner.
I can't work on it for now, hopefully someone with a better idea will come along!

Is it possible for someone to make the background less dark and still keep the model and the smoke the same?

Thanks!

That is what IamSam did, though the lighter the background, the less you will see of the smoke and some of the face.

Noise reduction is quickest done with a plugin like topaz, or you can do it by hand. If you apply gaussian blur to a duplicate layer until you can no longer see noise, then create a layer mask. Invert the mask and then paint the noise away with a white brush.

Made copy of head on a new layer and a copy of original layer, put head copy on top of both, middle layer i just gaussian blurred it slightly and lowered lighting.

I guess the easiest way to do it in my opinion would be to duplicate the layer (just for safety no real need ) select the color you want the background set the brush blending mode to lighten at the top not layer just the brush and then paint over the background anything that is a lighter tone to the color you selkected wont be effected, anything that is darker will.
