Basically what my idea is, is to take a picture of myself grabbing air. I want to take a picture of my friend, and turn him in to a "virtual" cardboard cut out, and then be able to make it look like I'm holding the "cutout".

Can anyone kick me in the right direction?

Very possible but sending you in right direction tough study ps

Oh and study some more

Usually when adding a person to a picture you want it to blend in and make the lighting the same. In this case do the opposite. Make it not blend in, use very hard edges not soft , to make it stands out somewhat. Second, make the lighting different on the "cutout", that would be another indication that it's not a real person. Third, add a reflection as you would see on a flat surfaced glossy photograph.
