Hello!

I was wondering if anyone could help me out with a little question...
I'm trying to separate a greyscale image into 7/8 different shades of grey - what's the best way to do this?

thanks! any help hugely appreciated,

alex

The quick and dirty way would be to use the Magic Wand with the Tolerance set low, and see what you get. Adjust the Tolerance as needed.
The best way would depend on the image itself and why you`re separating it this way.

hello,

thanks for the reply....
I'm separating it for screen printing, but want to change the greys to different colour so want to separate 7 different layers - it's going to be from a photograph.

any help?

cheers for the effort...

Image > Adjustments > Posterize

hey bud,

thanks for the tip - works a treat, but the thing is... now how do i seperate those 7 layers individually from the posterized image?

Select the eye dropper tool, then select in the option bar "point sample", which will also set the magic wand tool to point sample.
Select the magic wand tool, settings:

- tolerance 0 (since we only want to select one color)
- anti-alias off (to avoid problems with edges)
- contiguous off (to select the same grays, even if they're not connected)
- sample all layers on (needed if you add a second adjustment layer, otherwise you continously have to make the original layer active)

Zoom in and select a gray area with the magic wand tool
Once selected, add a solid color adjustment layer and select the proper color and click OK.
Continue with all other grays
Make final color adjustments where needed

Gaussian,

Thank you so much for the help, and even more for the welcome! So glad i found this place!

all the best to all of you, i'll definitely be back!
