Burnt edge effect

Hello all,

I am trying to get the effect of a burnt edge to a jpg image, similar to this video tutorial - wonderhowto.com/how-to-create-old-burnt-parchment-paper-photoshop-175598/ (sorry, not allowed to post links yet)

I don't need to create the parchment paper, I have an antique map that I want the edges "burned". when I use the Filter, Brush Strokes, Spatter it distorts the whole image. I tried adding a layer and cropping the photo but I'm just not getting it figured out.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

What I can suggest is this tutorial..... But first create a layer from the flattened Map image.... enlarge the canvass by say - 10 pixels before jumping into the tute. - Tutorial: ACHIEVE REALISTIC BURNED EDGES
