Brushes

Hello Curb, welcome to the Gurus.

I'm sorry but I don't understand the first part of your question. Could you give a bit more detail of the problem.
Is the selected layer hidden? (No eye icon showing on the active layer)

To resize the brushes just click on the Brush drop down in the Options menu. You can either select a preset brush from the palette or adjust the slider to an intermediate size.

Cheers Al

Thanks for the quick reply.

What I meant for my first question, is when I opened a new .psd file and tried to use a brush (after creating a layer for it), it said it needs a corresponding layer and it wouldn't let me use the brush.

hm... this has got me a tad begiggled as well. I tried everything i could think of to recreate that error message, but to no avail.

Do this please... explain step-by-step, button-by-button exactly what you're doing after you've created the new document. I'm guessing it's just an options thing here.

And for scaling brushes "on-the-fly", press the left/right square bracket keys on your keyboard.
To make your brush hard or soft "on-the-fly", hold the SHIFT key while pressing the square bracket keys. :righton:

I fixed that problem (I was actually using the wrong tool [saywhat] )

but now I don't know how to re-size the brushes. Does anyone know? (I'm using version 6.0)

If I remember still, there's an arrow next to the brush picker, click that and move the sliders.

I hope I'm right on this ( ya, as if v6 was 5 years ago - just lousy memory me 8} )

Hi WTCurb, welcome to PSG!

To resize the brush, you can use the square braquets : [ and ]
or you right+click, then choose "edit brush" to get the slider.

For the other problem you had, I think that you were trying to use the clone tool, or the history brush after a resizing?

I do recommend spending some time reading the user guide and the printed material that comes with Photoshop to get accointed with all the tools, you'll learn faster that way! :righton:

To resize, when I right click, the only option I have is to change the spacing. Can you show me a screenshot because I am not seeing this.

When you use a painting or retouching tool, you can show or hide the brushes palette by clicking Enter. If not, click on the small triangle at the right of the urrently active brush in the Options bar.

So when you have chosen your brush, it'll be visible in the Options bar. Now click on that preview in the options bar. You will see the options for that brush displayed.

diameter determines the size
hardness the fading of the edge
roundness the degree of oval/roundness
angle (used with oval brushes) changes the tilting of the oval
spacing the distance between each "element" or paint daub if you want it.

the latter two options can also be changed in the diagram

WtC, the enlarging and reducing options in Photoshop 6.0 where available only for the soft rounded brushes, AFAIK

In Photoshop 7.0, all the brushes are resizeable... a good reason to upgrade, the powerful brush engine of PS7.0, but we must not be far away form V 8.0, sou you could wait a little bit...

Hope this reaches you in time: if you would buy PS7 within a certain period before 8 comes out, you're entitled to a free upgrade. (that's how I got 7, so I know it's true.)
But I can't say how long the period is... certainly not six months...

Erik, IIRC, to do so , you must wait for an Official announcement of the next version of Photoshop.
