Brushes etc

Hi
Im using Photoshop 5.5 on a Mac platform and had to reload the program.
Im trying to find out how to get rid of the dodge/burn icon and get an exact brush circle size. (i've done the preferences thing and it does not work)
Ive done the make new brush and it does not work.

is usually the culprit.

Thank you but the only thing the caps lock does is change it from cross hairs to icon.
Any other ideas?

By "the preferences thing" do you mean you've changed the brush option in the prefs? Or, you've deleted and remade the prefs file over again?

In the user prefs, there's a specific setting for how you want your brushes to look... you messed with that at all?

In the general photoshop settings preferences>display>precise or brush size.
It seems that it is the crosshair or the icon hmmmmmm
