Hi all..

was just wondering which provider you use and if they are any good.

I'm on virgin media, 100MB ... what about you?..

I was thinking of going BT Infinity.. but have heard that the connection keeps failing?.

depends on your usage BT Infinity and Virgin media do the fastest on a wider spread but they are very heavy on throttling traffic.

York has new broadband rolling out in 2015 where sky and talktalk will be offering 1GB broadband

I am with sky only because I can only get adsl 22mb speed but they do truly unlimited with no fair usage or traffic throttling. but when I move in a couple of weeks I will be having virginmedia 152 mb but only because I will be flashing the router and bypassing their throttling, all though they now claim to only throttle upload and P2P traffic but we will see.

I'm on virgin, and I find them terrible. their payment plan doesn't for some reason include basic maintenance or repairs, their customer service is terrible, and their connection drops out and slows down regularly. when you complain, suddenly your internet magically speeds up again and they blame it on you.

I've asked them about 6 times in the past 6 months to provide a new router as the current one is about 8 years old now, and it locks up more times than i care for. have they done it? no... it makes me wonder what the hell the £30 a month is going on. especially when they are happy to refund it, but they aren't happy to spend half of that posting a new bloody router out to us!

Sky in my area is bad, but reliably bad, at least it maintains a 1 megabit download speed.

ugh, i've become very angry in my old age. but virgin really do wind me up.

Thanks guys... i have had sky twice in the past just give them another try... but never BT as they have not had infinity in my area until just recently...

The 2 times i have had sky they have been terrible.. i suffered for 12 months with slow speeds each time... I know what you mean about virgin slowing you down... this happens to me quite a lot... no idea why? and i have an up to date router.

I get the feeling with virgin that they slow you down so some one else is fast... then vise verse... all of a sudden i am fast again.

I have done internet speed checks and some times like you have had to phone them and ask why i am paying for a good speed and only getting crap... and again like you all of a sudden the speeds back up.

Is there a way i can monitor the speeds regularly.. even when i'm at work?

Hoogle... what is that you do when you
I will be flashing the router and bypassing their throttling
?.. i do not know of these things or how to do it.

Thanks guys.

To sum up it basically removes Virgins Big brother Software that tracks your usage and applies the speed limit of data passing through your connection.

However I don't recommend doing this as it is in violation of your contract and if caught they can terminate your account.

Not so much for the traffic limits but they will assume you will be using it for stealing here you can technically change your subscription from a 30 MB speed to the 152 or even max out the line beyond those limits depending where you are etc.

can you tell me how to flash the router in a PM? we're no longer bound to a contract with them, we just pay the monthly costs to keep it now.
