After Effects Blocked Energy Beam -- Need help!

I'm making an energy beam that's been blocked by some kind of shield. My professor showed us how to make the beam itself, but left us to the blocking on our own.

I need some help in giving my beam some 'depth'. When she showed us how to make a beam, it was just pure white with some mask feather. I want something a bit like this:

I just want to show that the beam is moving to the side and not just stopping after hitting the shield.

So far, I gave my beam a Fractal Noise effect, changed the type to Max and tweaked the brightness and contrast. I'd post a picture or a reference of what I really want, but I have yet to make five posts.

I'm trying to see if I can achieve the 'movement' thing by trying to move the fractal noise I chose to the right.. Thing is, I don't know how to do that.

Much help will be appreciated, and if you have better suggestions please do post them! :D
