I know this subject is way more complicated then can be explained in one question but............

I need to start learning this tool. Outside of the obvious (it's function), where are some places where you would use this tool? When I open the drop down window there are so many choices and without someplace to at least start learning I just end up closing it and moving on. I could just experiment but I've done that before and you end up creating things and then not remember what you did to get to that point. There has GOT to be a better way.

As always, thanks.

http://www.thinkdan.com/tutorials/photoshop/blendingmodes/ You can start here Lee.

The other thing that you want to do (apart from experiment, practise, experiment, practise) is to make a note of your results. ;)

After a while, it'll almost become "second nature" to predict what effect one blending mode will have on another, based on the images involved.

Seriously... experiment...practise... experiment... practise... there's no better teacher!!! ;)

Thanks Wendy. That is exactly what I need to at least get a basic understanding of where to use that tool.

You're welcome Lee! :) ;)

To be honest Lee, I often have a hard time too to remember what what every blending mode does. Many times I just scroll through the list until I have the effect I want. After a while you will notice that you start to memorize how some of them work.

Here, take a look at this thread;

Or this one;

Blending modes are also very useful to add non-destructive effects;

And something else Lee, blending modes can be used in a lot of places;

layers, brush tool, pencil tool, clone tool, pattern stamp tool, healing brush, patch tool, gradient tool, paint bucket tool, etc, etc.

As soon as you see the word Mode in your tool bar, then you'll know that you can use blending modes for that particular tool.
My advice is not to concentrate too much on the blending modes that you can use in combination with these tools, but rather focus on the layer blending modes.

Thanks Gaus. I put those in my favorites list so I can refer to them as needed. As always, you are a GREAT help. ;)
