Black foreground layer does reveal the layer underneath though? I use the paint brush to make my fades NOT the erasure. The erasure works the way you are saying?

If you are talking about revealing the layer beneath the masked layer then you could state it that way.

But typically it is stated to mean: On a mask you paint with black to conceal the masked layer contents and with white to reveal the masked layer contents.
