Hi all new to this forum and also to PS.
I was following a tutorial on vignette, working off the background layer with a square picture in the center of it, just to quickly show how it works, select the square, and then while selected apply layer mask from the layer panel. Now this is where i have a problem, in the tutorial after the layer mask is applied, the bg goes to it white bg around the square, this is where in the tutorial ones creates the vignette. But as i applied the layer mask, my bg goes transparent not white? I hope you can understand my problem... oh i am using cs6 trial version

thanks gary

You'll need to create a new background layer and place it below all the other layers. Fill this with white using the paint bucket tool (g).

Thanks for replying, I did tried that and it works great, but in the tutorial it has you doing on the bg layer, and not knowing much about PS, i was trying to get the same results as in the tutorial.

thanks again :)

By what you've said above I assumed you don't have a layer called background? You will get the same results, the background layer is just a regular layer. You can create a new layer, title it background and it's the same thing.

Here's a link to the tutorial, maybe you can better understand my problem

it's a utube video tutorial by lynda.com on cs6

IDK what version she is using. My PS is not smart enough to provide a BG color when I apply a mask and it will not allow a mask on a locked layer which is what a background layer is, indicated by the little lock icon. I am using CS5 and I don't remember what my last version allowed, PS6. There may be something wrong with my program as resetting preferences does noting to change that. I have to convert or duplicate my BG to add a mask, and like said above, need to make a BG layer below it.

Maybe RTC or someone more technically familiar with PS will have an answer. In any event, it's the rest of the process which is more important. Having to unlock the BG layer and add a color filled layer below is a work-around for the tutorial and the rest is the real lesson.

Thanks for looking, yeah i thought she was using cs6 but i could be wrong, maybe it's a mac version and different?

Hey Gary. She is using CS6 and I use CS6 as well. I'm not too sure why her transparency is turning into white and not a checkered pattern as it should (perhaps it's a setting she changed?) Although I wouldn't worry about the finished result as if you save the finished image as a jpeg the transparency turns to white anyway. Sorry that I couldn't be more help but I'm not too sure why this has happened.

As I said before, you could always add an additional layer below your background layer and color that white if you desire.

Thanks RT, I did get very hung up on that part of her video, trying to figure out why i couldn't get the same results. I knew I could make another layer and carry on with the tutorial, But i thought the trial version was limited and it bugged me to no end!
It still bugs me!!! I want that magic! LOL!

thanks again

Just a guess but it could be something to do with her graphics drivers and the software used to capture the video (not showing the transparency for some reason).

Ok update, Julieanne Kost Got back to me, and to get it to work like she had it in her tutorial, you need to use this setting

Transparency & Gamut preferences, try setting the Grid size to None. worked for me.
I just don't know if that changing this grid size to none will affect anything else?

Yeah I don't really see the point. Surely it will just confuse you making you think you have a white background layer visible all the time. Good work figuring it out though!
