Illustrator Best technique for creating a background like this? [Link inside]

Hello,

I want to create a background like that:

I know it's mostly triangles and trapezia that can be drawn with the pen tool, but how do I align them in a way that the edges match perfectly? I have tried to do it by hand, but it's always a few pixel off.

If I had to make this, I would make it in a vector based software such as Illustrator or Corel Draw, where I would have the abilty to snap to objects etc. Photoshop is a great program but is really not as well suited to this type of design as vector based programs.

that right there was very sloppy done

probably just make a background, then just make odd shapes with the lasso tool
