Batch crop AND straighten

How can one perform these 2 functions efficiently on several hundred images? I use Photoshop CS but will of course use whatever program is best for the job.
 
If you are going to crop them all the same size then you can just record an action, then go to file > automate > batch then select the action and folders and you set to go. What do you mean by straighten though? If you need to crop them at different sizes I think you can do that with scripts, but I don't know how to do that.
 
As p?tr??k points out, if the exact same series of changes to images are required, an action is the way to go. Also you can turn an action into a droplet for easy use. However, you mention straightening images. Does that mean using the Image > Rotate Canvas > Arbitrary? As that would vary in each image, that would have to be done by hand.

We need a bit more info about your specific actions on those files.
