Basic question involving layers and eraser

Ultimately I wish to do the following: from a satellite image cut OUT and discard the lake surface with intent to use the remainder as a 'layer' to over-lay a created image underneath...

I suspect this is quite simple...but trying various permutations of the question via 'Help' has so far not allowed me to unlock the secrets...

Any help, direction is and will be greatly appreciated.

Hi

Open the created image and the satellite image as well. Make sure they are the same resolution in image>size, and both at the same zoom. Then, using the move tool drag the satellite image over the other one to make a 2 layered file. With the satellite image highlighted in the layers pallette, click on the layer mask icon at the bottom of the layers pallette. Select the eraser tool and erase the lake bit so the other image shows through, when your done youu can still move the top layer around so that the right bit shows trough the hole you erased!

I hope this is of some help, I'm a newbie too! ;)
