Background color toggling problem

I'm using CS5, and I have always been able to change colors on text by simply selecting the type then clicking on a color from my swatch menu. Now I can't change the color without actually going into the the color menu of the character palette and selecting a color there. It's tremendously slowed down my workflow. The toggling between the foreground and background colors seems to be acting up, and seems to be switching back and forth on its own. I've done the ctrl-alt-shift restarting Photoshop, but that doesn't work either. Again, this started just yesterday. It's probably so simple, but I just cant figure it out. Thanks in advance.!

Could you post a screen shot including the Layer Stack? That might be helpful as there can be many sources of issues and this might allow forum members to provide more targeted advice.

I just figured out the problem: I needed to go to the color palette and click on the foreground color. I don't understand how this happened, I guess it's just a Photoshop glitch.
