Auto numbering images

Is there a way to auto number files with the file number (less .jpeg) and save without having to let my computer grind to a halt, as it does using Automate, contact sheet.
The objective is to create a preview set for distribution to clients with the file number annotated at bottom centre.
Also, is there any way of creating the text/font/colour/stroke of my choice?
HELP!!!

I'm 99.9% sure all of the following programs will do what you want, and will do it much faster than PS:
Lightroom
Faststone Image viewer / resizer
Photo Mechanic
Image Magik

Lots of people want to do the same sort of thing. In fact, many low cost film point and shoot cameras in the 1990's had a provision to add such info (especially date and time) to each (film) image. Almost certainly, I'm sure there are plenty of other, less "professional" programs favored by the general public, the scrapbooking crowd, etc. that will also do this. You may even have something on your computer already that will work.

IMHO, using PS to perform such a simple task is like using a sledgehammer to drive a nail.

It just seems the logical place to do it, given that the images are all processed in PS.
All I need to do is add the file number as an overlay on the image, so as to speed up preparation of preview sets

While PS might seem like the logical place to do it, as you pointed out in the very 1st sentence of your 1st post, using PS caused your computer to "grind to a halt". With PS, you are using a a lot of resources that are completely unneeded to accomplish what you want, whereas the other small programs that I mentioned will zip right through producing contact sheets.

For example, a couple of months ago, our large local volunteer fire department needed the names of their 400+ members overlaid on contact sheets. The woman in charge had already named each image file with the name of the individual. I turned Faststone loose on a directory containing the 400 images, and it completed the operation in less than 30 seconds on an ancient laptop that I brought over to the firehouse.
