After Effects are there any other products like Adobe after effects?

yes but after effects is the best depending on what you want it for.

sony vegas

apple final cut pro

adobe premier

coral visual studio

the list goes on but the only competition in that list is final cut pro only available on macs.

sony vegas is a good all round video editor but after effects is by far the best imo for adding effects especially special effects.

but if you just want to edit video clips colour correct add basic effects etc then sony vegas is easier to learn, after effects seems to be the long way around especially as you have to render preview as to live preview.

but that said after effects is more special effects as than merging home movies etc together.

if you want a really in depth, advanced, professional compositor, you should check out something called nuke, though it is very different from any of the others listed

my father is a visual effects artist, and uses it pretty often

Most common applications like after effects are Foundry Nuke and Apple Motion. After Effects is the most common for consumers. IF you want to ahead of the game for visual effects, learn nuke and also learn the 3D program called Maya.
