Hi James, there is really a lot going on in these two graphics! I doubt that the second signature was made in Photoshop. Maybe the text.

As for the first, If I were to hazard a guess, I would say the "spiky" things are custom made brushes from previously existing graphics that the original artist found somewhere. They are used with multiple layers and effects.

Most forum custom signature makers have extensive libraries of abstract graphic imagery that they just cut and paste. Very little of the content is created from scratch, only the text.

I think Sam is on the right track with the custom shapes in the first image. They could be created of course (someone did) and I would use a basic shape and then the pen tool to mask out the jags that go through them, but if there was a custom brush that would be my choice, quick and easy. Probably some varying blend modes used and lighting effects to create the flares.

There are also so many fonts out there that you can be sure to find some that have these eccentric qualities. I would look under grunge fonts for one thing, and maybe techno for the first image. Some pen tooling may have been used here. If I were to try to remake the second image, I would find a bunch of auto parts to start with, transform them, then mask and use the pen tool to create the spike shapes. Must be lots of metal shapes, even from a junkyard image. There also appears to be a robot shape with eyes. The ribbon can be created any number of ways and the in and out effect would be created by using a mask to delete parts of it so it winds through. That is my guess anyway.

Cinema 4d and fine touched with photoshop for flares.

Create some random primitive shapes in cinema 4d and use deformer/ displacement or fracture for main body

Then add some 3d texts

render it out as a png alpha channel

create a dark background in ps

import your main image in this case the turtle

Import your 3d work

and then finish it off using lens flair/ optical flairs / knoll light factory for photoshop (used in this example) or lens flair brushes

and finish it off how you like not exact but this has taken me about 10 mins

the extra text effects are shattered text effects in cinema 4d you can youtube those tutorials and textures
