Welcome,
Check out the Photographers forum on here. Tom Mann is the moderator and he is a photographer supreme as well as being extremely knowledgeable on PS and many graphics areas.

Oops, Not being a photographer as my main interest, I didn't realize there is not a Forum per se for same. But be assured there are plenty here and Tom is the Section Moderator.

Hey, BC - A BIG WELCOME. It would be great to have another person whose major interest is photography.

To stir up some interest in photography, about a month ago, we started a series of more-or-less weekly themed photographic threads, e.g., "Old Timers", "Mountains", "Animals Doing Their Thing", "Abstracts", "Portraits", "Unusual Viewpoints", etc. Browse through them and you'll get a feel for what we've done, who is who, etc. Why don't you post a few of your own and we can get a nice interchange going.

To find them, either go directly here:
http://www.photoshopgurus.com/forum/photography/

Or just enter the following search into Google {thread photography site:photoshopgurus.com}.

If you'd rather talk technique or equipment, that would be cool. I'm a Nikon guy and Steve is a Canon guy.

Best regards, and welcome again!

Tom Mann

PS - I'll be starting another one of those threads this weekend.

PPS - ALB, you're making me blush!

i mate , im a bit of a photographer and i dont want to spend a lot of money on expense dslr and lenses , im looking at the new bridge cameras , specifically the fujifilm hs50 , 1200mm zoom i think with image stablisation pretty good results in goodlight , and with the aid of photoshop i think its probably all i need now

small sensor but im notlooking to blow up huge shots maybe 10x 8 or a little bigger at most , whats your thoughts on these cameras with ps as an aid

I guess my question for you would be, how serious are you about photography?

well im not going to be selling photos or id get quality equipment , just looks very tempting to have a 28-1200 zoom you dont need a tripod for and take reasonable pics

shame the sensor isnt a little bigger , but with photoshop you can do wonders , id like them too make about a 1k model in superzoom and really get it all together

"...but with photoshop you can do wonders..."

Funny, back in 1993 or 1994 when I first started to use PS (somewhere around v3), I used to think the same thing.

However, now, with 20 years of experience under my belt, I no longer feel that way. ;-)

Put differently, even with PS, you can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear -- start with a really good quality image and the total amount of time you spend on a project (both in photography and post-production) goes way down and the overall quality goes way up.

Here is something to think about:

If such a lens was f/2.8 wide open, realizing that the f-number of lenses increases as the ratio of the FL's, this means that at maximum zoom (if I did the numbers in my head correctly), the widest f-number available to you would be around f/60.

Also, don't forget that the minimum usable hand-held shutter speed is around 1 divided by the FL of the lens, so such a lens could only be hand held at shutter speeds faster than around 1/1000 or 1/2000th of a second. OK, for the sake of argument, lets assume that such a lens was produced with a vibration reduction system that gave you an extra 2 or 3 stops, ie, around 1/250th of a second

Do you think that being forced to always shoot at f/60 and 1/250th sec in all lighting conditions might just limit the utility of the lens at maximum zoom?

PS - BTW, the above completely disregarded the fact that very long lenses need extremely high surface finish to produce good images. If the mfgrs only give this hypothetical lens a surface smoothness similar to what they use on current APS lenses, this means that there is no way it will give sharp images even if the f-stop and minimum hand-holding speed were adhered to.

I couldnt have said this better myself.
The FujiFilm camera you are talking about and it seems to be an okay camera for the price. But I've never been the type to go with 'okay'. I dont need to have the BEST, but good or great suits me.

I have a Canon 7d, its great, but not the best. However the interchangeable lenses, ISO, shutter speed and overall durability suit me for nearly everything at the moment.

Gotta agree with Tom....The more you start with, the better the end result will be. I stopped 35mm years ago and switched to 6X6 and 6X7 cm, and 4X5" just to get more from the negative. Now I would love a MASSIVE sensor, but I survive with a 12mpx...

Yes your image can look great from a small image / negative, But Bigger IS better

I picked up a used Pentax DSLR with lenses for $350. Check the B&H or Adorama sites.
