Animated Gifs as avatars...

over the course of having an animated avatar for myself, i realized just how distracting and annoying they could be.

I'm probably the only person who thinks this, what's new there, but i feel there needs to be some sort of moderation on animated avatars as some can be really off putting if the animation is way too distracting.

PLEASE don't blow this simple opinion and ask out of proportion i don't mean rule animated gifs out completely...

what i'm saying is things like this:
Flashing_box.gif
you know like where everything is moving quickly and flashing in your face constantly
they really are quite deterring and they really need to be ruled out or at least the user asked to tone it down a bit.

but things like this:
Sphere_rotating.gif
Gifs that move slowly and aren't so bright/in your face not so constant (moves only once every few seconds or something)
they generally aren't so deterring, it's still distracting, but it's easier to work around.

that's all i'm saying, a humble opinion from a simpleton. scream and shout if you want, i don't care.

oooooh.... hypnotizing light..... lol

Difficult to make a call on this , Z. Not everyone here creates animated avatars . And the ones around and in the past are, to me, not that distracting.

Look at it as extra "Bling" in the browser....

just like swearing when i asked for a censor? that little extra "bling" that gets deleted manually by mods wasting their time, it just doesn't make sense, every suggestion i've made has gone nowhere, whether it's as crap as this one is or useful to both members and mods, like the censor suggestion.

yet something controversial that puts more work in for the mods is accepted willy nilly?

i don't get it, really i don't

Don't get me wrong, Z.

It's not that your suggestion is not accepted.

For as long as avatars are tastefully done in accordance to guidelines or unwritten code of viewable ethics, it's acceptable.

I understand you may find it distracting. But that's how you perceive it.

What may affect one, may not necessarily affect another. So which ever way we take the avatar discussion, it will be a stalemate.

I could just imagine what the reactions of members will be if I use a BALUT for my avatar... not surprised if everyone will be disturbed with it.... lol....

So long as it's dancing with a top hat and cane, I'm fine with it.

May I just ask what exactly an animated avatar is distracting you from. Making this thread has distracted you more than any avatar can. If you are looking through a forum, you will see things that are normally found in a forum, especially a forum about graphics. The fantastic Mods of this forum do moderate avatars and signatures, and if they found this problematic or in anyway 'too much', they would come up with a solution.

I think if you want your suggestions about certain topics to be acted upon, instead of just listened to, you should make sure that it is about something you are not the only person to have a problem with. I have never seen an animated avatar done to annoy anyone here. Is there one that is annoying you, or is this as I assume, a totally pointless thread about an avatar that has not even been made? I get offended when I'm looking in a forum, and somebody puts an annoying flashy .gif in the thread when they know it is annoying. It is not the same dimensions or position as an avatar, so how can they be compared.

They are no more distracting than sounds from other people in the house or outside, or things moving outside the window.

If you use Firefox, this may help you.

Well now, this could get out of hand.

I know what you mean actually Zee. Though it is extremely rare that one causes my seizure disorder to come to the fore! Just kidding. But it is those that have a flash effect, flashing on and off with .1 sec intervals, that make me cover the left side of the monitor or move on to a post that isn't so intense. Some of us just have lower tolerance for what we consider irritations. Like my neighbors to the west! Too often I have to close the windows and doors.

That said, I am wondering what all suggestions you have made that have been ignored And what do you mean by, "yet something controversial that puts more work in for the mods is accepted willy nilly?"

I think dv8 is correct about perception. What avatar bothers me totally doesn't hit his irritation meter a bit. I think Chad is right that no one actually makes their avatar, animated or otherwise, to purposefully annoy someone else. That doesn't mean that I might not personally find an image distasteful. If it does not break any rules, is not indecent or racist, or something of that ilk, we mods will leave it alone. That's just the way it is.

It might be interesting though, to see if it's a gender thing? Put out 5 of the same animation all running at different speeds. They'd have to be the kind of thing that has some, well, I call it flashing element. Then take a poll as to which timing is the best.
